Fourth Grade Curriculum: Overview
As fourth graders, your child will have a lot of information to learn this year! They will take three SOL tests at the end of fourth grade: Math, Reading Comprehension, and Virginia Studies. Here you will find a breakdown of what they will be learning in each subject this year.
Math
1st Nine Weeks: Unit 1: Whole Numbers Place Value; Unit 2: Addition/Subtraction; Unit 3: Geometry
2nd Nine Weeks: Unit 4: Multiplication; Unit 5: Division; Unit 6: Elapsed Time
3rd Nine Weeks: Unit 7: Fractions: Comparing and Ordering; Unit 8: Fractions: Addition and Subtraction; Unit 9: Decimals;

Language Arts
Cursive: Students will learn/practice Zaner-Bloser cursive all year. Grammar: 1st Nine Weeks: Complete sentences, ending punctuation, quotation marks, commas; 2nd Nine Weeks: Common and Proper Nouns, Action and Linking Verbs, Subject/Verb Agreement; Pronouns, Adjectives, Adverbs; 3rd Nine Weeks: Homophones, Propositional Phrases, Double Negatives, Singular Possessives, Articles; 4th Nine Weeks: Review weak areas Writing: Students will learn the steps of the writing process and how to write a personal narrative, persuasive and expository essays. Students will also explore how to write nonfiction of their own, such as directions for games or recipes. Students will complete mini-research projects through the year, with a larger research project in the spring. Reading: Students will be exposed to literature and learn skills such as main idea and fact and opinion. They will also learn the various types of genre (i.e. historical fiction, realistic fiction, etc) and author's purpose. Comparisons between Fiction and Non-Fiction texts will be studied.
